07fourwinns, my apologies for not reading your posts closely enough. I was assuming we were talking about a Merc setup since you were asking about Merc fluids. I agree with the other guys-use the Volvo gear lube. Buy it online if you don't have a local dealer who carries it. I don't use Merc engine oil anymore, but I did when I first bought my boat for 2 years, because you can easily buy comparable engine oil at an auto parts store, Wal-Mart, or online. However, gear lube is a different story and I see no reason to chance it.

Actually, you said to buy the oil at Marine Parts Express. I had no idea they had a parts break down, hadn't looked for it on that site yet. Either way, the whole point of a forum is to spread information. So yes, I was lost on what the numbers for the seals were when I came to this site.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Just in case anyone runs into this thread later on and wants the part numbers, here they are. Evidently the SX only needs one gasket for the water intake passage and exhaust(Its one gasket for both). Not sure how the u joints are sealed off, guess Ill find out when I take the O/D off.

-Drain plug Oring (3855081)
-Dip Stick Plug Oring (3852045)
-Vent Plug Oring (3855081)
-Transom Seal (3889788)

All of the seals are only $5 or so.

I think that is the only gasket on the Volvo SX, the ujoint bellows is sealed by fitting into the bearing carrier on the upper unit. This is similar to my OMC Cobra but the Cobra also has a paper gasket that seals between the pivot housing and the drive.

I put a thick coat of OMC triple guard grease in the inner lip of the bellows and also on the bearing carrier as per the shop manual when I reinstall the drive...

Put all Amsoil in this year, usually put the Volvo stuff in, but don't like the only Volvo dealer near me too much(they make way too much of a production about buying anything, wanting to search part numbers and serial numbers and stuff when all I want is some SAE30 Oil and some Gear Oil) and didn't want to drive an hour to the FW dealer. Got sold on the Amsoil marine gear lube and some new 10W30 4-Stroke Marine Oil(Supposed to be as stable as a SAE30 at high temps, otherwise was going to get their SAE30 Diesel Oil) from a friend, so we'll see how it works come spring. I would definitely skip on the merc oil though if it's not full synthetic.

Thanks LouC. I did notice that the OM said to put grease on the lip of the bellows so I figured the seal had something to do with that.

There are no marine shops what so ever around our lake that would sale any volvo parts or Amsoil. Ill probably end up just ordering Volvo gear oil off line when I do my yearly spring order of marine parts. Thought about just using Mobil 1 but I want this thing to last pretty much forever so I figure I should use the best.

For anyone that visits Iboats very much, they swear by the Merc High Perf gear oil.

I read a while ago that volvo either still recommends/used to recommend the Mobil1 if Volvo wasn't available, not sure if this is true or not, though I saw it on Bob Is the Oil Guy or somewhere.

I'm 98% certain that the "factory" Volvo 30W is Amsoil.

That's what I have gotten out of it, http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub ... ber=937845. There seems to be quite a bit of discussion around the net regarding who makes it, and all I have been able to figure out is that there aren't any Synthetics that call themselves SAE30 aside from Royal Purple and Amsoil ACD, but then there are a lot who say the Synthetic Multi Weights are just as good, I guess I will see come spring. Does anyone know who makes volvo's filters? I've been using PureOne filters lately, partly due to the rubberized coating on them makes them a little easier to grip onto when they get oil on them.

Yep, That's the pic I had seen before. Never seen the gallon jugs in person, but I would definitely tend to agree with you that the stuff is most likely some sort of a Amsoil product made for volvo.

Also for the volvo sx... good luck finding Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90... it is a rare find at a local store (even in larger cities)... You can find it with the LS (limited slip) additive (for auto transmissions) but you will not find it straight.... this basically ties you to buying the volvo brand oil at astronomical prices...

Its not a big deal to order the mobil 1 SYN.

Also, the limited slip additive is for limit slip differentials, not transmissions of any kind.

Other brands make synthetic 75w-90. Casterol makes it and can be found in most big chain auto parts stores.
