I've seen this mentioned a few times, and it's one of my annoyances too. That is the lack of a glove box/cubbyhole on many Horizons. Has anyone come up with a good solution?

One of my winter projects is to come up with one. Nothing extravagant, just something to keep some charts, manuals, etc. in and someplace for quick storage of things that don't fit in the small compartment under the stereo. I've thought about building one under the helm, as there is plenty of room, but I'm not sure I could get it to look nice.

Another option is to find some sort of tool box / storage container that stows away neatly but I really haven't found anything.

Any other ideas?

This may not directly apply for what you are looking for in terms of map/chart storage, but it might spur some ideas. My wife bought me some cheap vented clear plastic containers that mount with suction cups. They are oval shaped and I'm guessing about 3" wide by 6" long by 4" deep. I think they are originally designed to hold bath products in a shower. I have one mounted below the helm that I throw my cell phone, sunglasses, etc. in. My wife has one mounted by the passenger's seat where she keeps her quick access for sunscreen, bug spray, etc. I mounted another one on the inner wall of the helm storage accessed by the flip up seat in the bow. In there I keep some cleaning products so they don't roll around in this storage area. Maybe you could find something similar that would meet your needs. Cheap, easy installation/removal, multiple use solutions are always a hit with me.

I'm actually looking for something similar to these, but bigger and doesn't need suction cup mounting. I would like some perforated "baskets" to store ropes in one of the under seat storage areas in the cockpit area. If I run across anything that looks applicable to your needs while searching for my "rope baskets", I'll let you know.

It might be good for us Horizon guys to start a thread discussing & showing pictures of where they store everything. I know it's been heavily debated on what a boater needs to have on board with them, but I have not seen where anybody talks about where they store their gear. I hate a cluttered boat which is why I jumped to the H260. I've got it fairly well LOC (lean, orderly & clean) now, but there is always room for improvement. If I get some gumption this winter, maybe I'll start a thread like this.

I use the way too small "garbage can" by the sink to store items like can cozies, sun block lotion, bottle opener, and other small items we used to keep in the glove box of our old boat. I use the extremely small "glove box" under the radio for things like my cell phone, wallet, ipod, camera, gps. This typcially works out--though I did learn one drawback with the garbage can is rain leaking in--so you just have to be careful what you leave in there. Overall this worked out, but I do miss having a decent sized glove box that you know will stay dry.

An overall storage thread would be great. I'm still working through that since I only bought the boat in mid August and I'm still a rookie with it.

One rule we made with this boat is that "nothing will be out while underway". Our last boat was 19' with sport seating and a sundeck so there wasn't a whole lot of storage and we always had stuff out. That always annoyed me. With this one there is plenty of storage, we're just not too sure where the best place to store stuff is.

The tiny compartment under the stereo is good for wallets, cellphones, etc. I currently have a smaller toolbox that I keep in the head (since we never use it) with sunscreen, and the other "misc" stuff that used to go in our glovebox and worthless built in cooler on the old boat, but that doesn't seem to work the best.

We actually use the way too small garbage can, we just change the bag frequently.

I put lake maps, printed info/brochures, and some miscellaneous dry stuff in the large space in front of the helm in a zippered dry bag, as well as my 10 quadrillion lumen spotlight and also my small microwave (when I do bring it). The trash receptacle by the sink is for hand sanitizer, wipes, lotions,lip balm, clothes pins/clips (for tieing up towels as curtains and to dry), wife & girls' hair clips/bands, etc., and the head has a fold up wire rack for storage of towel/sunscreen bags, friends' back packs, and also a stay-on bag with compartments that is stocked with napkins, plastic forks, plates, cups, corkscrew, sharp knife, paper towels, extra trash bags, etc. On the floor of the head we have a kitchen sized trash can with a spring loaded touch lid (which we invariably fill at least 2/3 on any day on the water). We use the little compartment under the radio for wallets, ipods, cameras, maybe others' keys, and my Tom Tom GPS. I also have one of 2 fire extinguishers in the head area, and, although we don't use it, still have the portolet in there. I'm going to keep it out this season. I do have some suction cup containers around the cockpit for coozies, and various things, and I have gotten to keeping a stubby stainless screwdriver, a few magic erasers, and a couple of rags and sponges in these baskets so I can satisfy my OCD urges fully while anchored.

I had similar issue with storing note pads, Binocular and other small junks need to be near by while under way. I found a soft-made Binocular holder made by Beckton and installed it side/behind captain’s seat. It almost sit on the floor and nicely tucked in and not eye sore since captain’s seat covers the view. This is where subwoofer typically mounts but we are not stereo freak so works well for us. I made an aluminum bracket for the holder and this holder is mounted to the hull with double sticky tape so I did not drill holes to hull. Our boat is in storage for winter so I can not post picture but I will in Spring…
