Greetings all,

I'm a newbie here and to Four Winns products!
I apologize if I'm starting a discussion on an old topic so if there's info someplace here already please point the way.

I bought a 93 Horizon 190 this past spring and I was going through it a few days ago to get done what I could for the spring. I had the alternator tested by my neighbor who owns an auto electric shop (so I trust the source) and found out it had seen better days and he suggested having it at least rebuilt. He also discovered it had been worked on before, two housing bolts were snapped but it was thrown back together “good enough” to work.
He figured it would cost about $130 to rebuild if he could find another housing for it but he didn’t hold a lot of hope which brings me to my problem.

I need to find an alternator for as little $$$$ as I can and time is ticking!

Everywhere I call is “pretty sure” of the part number I need but the only way to know for sure is by the engine serial # which I cannot find for the life of me!
I’ve searched the engine and engine compartment for the serial plate but no success.

Does anybody know where I can look? Is it hidden underneath or behind something?

Boat details:
1993 Horizon 190
Hull ID 4WNMS117K293
5.0L HO V8 (Ford) Carburated
OMC COBRA OUTDRIVE

Many thanks
4WW

I'm not 100% sure as to the location on the engine. But you may try calling Four Winns directly. If you give them the hull ID #, they may be able to either give you your engine serial number or the part number for the alternator you are looking for.

My 97 Volvo Penta has the engine serial plate as a sticker on the valve cover. Mine was during the joint venture years between VP and OMC so yours might have been similar. The sticker looks like it could come off so yours might be missing.

I have a 96 200 horizon with a 5.0fl and the serial plate was on the engine block on the right rear looking at the engine between the head and the intake manifold but on the top of the block itself. I used a mirror, rag and a flashlight to find it. The tag measured about 1/2" to 5/8" wide x 2 1/2' long. Happy hunting and good luck

I contacted Four Winns & they got back to me within a day with the following:

"Thank you for writing. The engine# is 1250434, outdrive# 0766938. Parts are readily available, we refer customers to:

Pangborn Marine, 989-832-8641

Thank you,

Four Winns Boats, LLC."

The problem is that this number doesn’t mean anything to anyone I call not even to the folks they referred me to, the guy at Pangborn said it would be nice to have the serial # which will be a 10 character # starting with 50F or 502F.

It looks like there WAS something on the valve cover, hmm that’s too bad…

I did the rag/mirror/flashlight while standing on my head trick! But not knowing what where to look or what I was looking for proved pointless. I’ll try it again…but this time with Fiz’s directions!

Thanks guys, I’ll let ya’ll if I find it.

The number you got from Four Winns could actually be the serial number. I think what you actually need is the engine model number.

If you look at this link you will find a nice parts catalog for pretty much everything that OMC has made and what BRP is now making.

http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1 ... 0&siteid=1

Change the little drop down menu on the upper left to Stern Drive to see the engine options you are looking for.
