Well the best way is to post a clear pic....then I could say for sure.... black color and flat across the top, dog clutch pure OMC Cobra as you said. They were made from 1986-1993. Only ones of those to avoid are the 87-89 460 Ford 460 ones. for them, it's hard (like impossible) to get certain parts like the engine coupler and exhaust manifolds. Those had the standard Cobra upper unit and a bigger lower unit from the V-8 OMC outboard gearcase.
The one Marc posted is the OMC cone clutch before the joint venture with Volvo. These were used from 1990-the mid 90s. The joint venture OMCs (1994-1998 model years) were black not silver grey like the Volvo SX, but other than the color, they were identical to the Volvo SX. The one Marc posted is much bigger than both the original omc and the joint venture one. If you ever saw them side by side the difference in size is obvious. I've actually only seen one of those, on a 1990 FW Liberator with a Chevy 454.
Keep in mind that anything but the joint venture drive will result in lower resale value...

When this gets figured out, let me know. I have a 1994 278 Vista with twin 5.0L engines. The drives are Volvo Sx which was a joint venture between OMC and Volvo. They have the cobra logo on the cover and the transom bracket has a cover with OMC embossed on it. They are not identified as King Cobra. The water pump is located inboard on the side of the engine. They have a cone clutch and shift much better than an OMC cobra or King Cobra (both of which I had). I have 1100 hours on the drives and they still shift like new.
I will be watching this thread, need to know if there is some problem with my series of drive.
Dan

I'm going up to the marina on Saturday morning. I'll post some pics when I get back. Maybe if you get a chance, you could do the same maryannII. It would give us all a visual comparison.

Well, I just got back from the marina to see the 258. Very clean boat and well taken care of. May need some new window panels in the camper top but other than that it's turnkey.
The drive is a Cobra SX which was confirmed by the onsite mechanic. I put in an offer of $14000.
Here are some pics

That drive is identical to mine. Been very good to me for over eleven years. That should be a great boat for you. Check the anodes. Seems like a bit of corrosion going on. Dan

Yep that's the SX Cobra joint venture OMC for sure. I'd get it good and cleaned up and have the gear oil checked for water and have a pressure check done if you can. The only issue I have heard of on these drives, is that some had leaky prop shaft seals that's why you want to at least check the gear oil for water. But that's true on any drive that's been used for a while.
Just go over the whole boat carefully. I look for hull damage, and wood rot first. Then if it passes that part, check the mechanicals. I'd want to make sure that those supports for the swim platform that are screwed into the transom were well sealed. Try backing out a screw and see if brown water comes out (rot juice!) if so no good. Be careful of rot when looking at any wood cored boat that's more than a few years old.

The mechanic I spoke to yesterday said that the owner is quite picky and gets servicing done regularly. Having said that, I will still get my own checks done. Good point about the swim platform supports, thank you. When I put my offer in I made it conditional on the boat passing a hull survey, an acceptable sea trial and the boat passing a lien search.
The sales guy said she was pretty adamant about getting close to 19K, so if she doesn't come down I'll walk.

Well if that one happens to fall through, here a couple that might be worth a phone call. They are a bit of a drive but maybe you could see if any one on the board is close to them and they could check them out for you.

I bought our 248 in Michigian and bringing it over was the easiest thing in the world. I was in and out of customs in 20 min. You just need to have all of your bills with you. The more info you have for them the better. If you decide to go that route I can let you know more. There is lots of info on the net. Just remember you end up paying all of the taxes before you are finished.

Wow. I didn't think it would be that easy. I remember when my parents moved back to Ontario from Arizona (1997) it was a nightmare getting their car in. It seemed like they had to jump through hoops for Canada Customs. Maybe a boat is different than a car as far as regulations go. I called my cousin in Alpena and he's up to going to check out the boats. He has a Cruisers Yachts 300 Express, a 2009 I think, at Thunder Bay Shores marina so he is quite excited to go look at boats.

Yes cars are a whole different story! I took a 6 hour trip to buy ours and did the deal had the money wired over night and brought the boat home less than 12 hours later. The wire went through in less than 2 hours so we could of left the night but decided not to.

Here's another to check out http://www.hallssportcenter.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?sid=2807254E-02X2K27K2011J8I41I19JPMQ3024R0&veh=2031653

Well, the deal is dead. I added to the offer a couple of more conditions. 1. An engine compression test and 2. pressure test the drive. She was originally asking $19500 and countered back at $18500. I countered back at $14500. She then countered at $18000 even but removed the two conditions on engine compression test and drive pressure test. That's when I walked. Something wrong there.
Oh well. The search goes on.

Good move. I agree, something smells about that seller. It was priced too high for that year anyway.

I'm sure you have seen these already. But just to illustrate how overpriced the 1994 258 was.
