We were out in Vegas last week and did a quick trip to Hoover Dam. Being interested in the marina we could see to the north of the Dam, we followed the signs just outside Boulder City. Before we could get to the marina, there was a pay gate. Pricing was $10.00 for car access or a yearly also available.

We deferred due to time but was wondering why the charge? It did not look like a state park and apparently we were looking at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Hemenway Harbor.



Was also surprised how low the water was. Have heard things are down but this looked scary. Must say the new bridge is an engineering marvel (not that Hoover Dam isn't).

I must have missed the signs showing I was entering a National Park area. Explains a lot. We normally don't see a paid access to marina areas around here.

Agreed - pretty rare to even have to pay to launch or park down here in San Diego.

Not that I recommend it, but if no one was at the toll booth, You could have just drove in to check out the marina. Only gonna be there for 30 min and not use the lake or beach, no fee.

They have mulitiple people at the Lake Mead booths. No chance of that happening.
We always just paid the yearly sticker and it was only like 25 bucks per car.

Lead, Follow, or get the Hell out of the Way!

Ouch! For the last 4 years you could purchase an annual pass for both your truck and boat for $40.00 or a 1 week pass for $10.00. According to the link above the annual pass will be $60.00 this year or $26.00 for the 7 day pass. I hope with the increased fee's they plan on refurbishing the docks at Kathran's landing. They sure did a nice job up at Cottonwood Cove.

Jeff - have you been charged at Mohave? I have never seen anyone at Cottonwood Cove collecting fees and it's probebly been 10 years since I've been to Kathryn's Landing.

Jnizi, the lake is down over 100 feet but has acutally come up almost 20 feet since last summer. It's the first time in about 4 years that it has started a slow come back from the droughts. It's the largest man made lake in the U.S. and is still over 200 feet deep in some areas with over 500 miles of shoreline and 110 miles long! I have been boating there over 30 years and keep my boat in dry storage just a couple miles from where you tried to get in.

Kat's landing has charged for years, and Cottonwood is getting a new fee station by Memorial day this year. The only other "free" entrances left are Temple Bar on Mead, and Willow Beach which is on the other side of Hoover Damn and feeds into Mojave. As for the fee raises, it's acutally $10 for boat and $10 for car which made it go from $40 to $60 per rig. Still a great deal if you use it for 6 or 7 months a year like I do.

Erik, yes they have a fee station collecting money or checking annual passes unless you get to the lake before 6:00am or after 6:00pm when there are no rangers posted. I have always purchased the annual pass. We store the boat in Fort Mojave AZ south of Laughlin and it rarely sees any other lake besides Mojave. Before if we saw the boat more than 4 times per season it was cost effective to have the annual pass. Now I only have to go 2.31 times before the $60.00 pass becomes economically viable. We usually don't start our season or purchase the pass until mid May and I used it 8 times last season. Put the boat away over thanksgiving. Although i'm not thrilled about the cost increase, I can't wait to spend the extra twenty bucks!

Lake Mead is the largest man made lake by volume of water. But Powell, the Crown Jewell of the Colorado drainage has more surface area, so I think its the biggest Man made lake.

Powell has over 2,000 miles of shoreline which is more than the combined states on the Pacific Coast. It is 400 feet deep, 186 miles long and has a water storage capacity of 27,000,000 acre feet of water

But thats just My bias oppinion

As much as I love and praise Mead, I'm hitting Powell this Sept/Oct. If it wasn't so far away, I'd be spending all of my weekends there. It truly should be one of the wonders of the world. I like to describe it as Lake Mead on steroids. One good thing about Mead is that no matter what weekend or holiday you're there, if you know the lake, you can get to an area where you'll be lucky to see a boat or two an hour. Granted, it takes a few gallons of gas to get there, but for me it's well worth it....
