The transom anode looks straightforward but do I have to split the outdrive to get to the gimbal anode?

No, you don't!! Thats the bottom of the drive.

To me at lest, that pic looks like a Merc drive. But I am not up on Volvos.

Odd choice of descriptions; one is on the transom shield (the trapesoidal one), the other is on the outdrive. Both removeable with no additional dismantling. Bear in mind the transom anode may actually be 2 anodes depending on the transom assembly ( SX/ SX-MHP).

I removed the anodes when I got home last night. They were both easy to get to and held on by two bolts each. The gimbal anode was underneath the outdrive and easily accessible. The gimbal anode appeared to have been working as it had surface corrosion all over it but had not been eaten away. The transom anode looked like new and that is where I had been getting most of my corrosion. I could not find a part number on the gimbal anode but the transome anode had 3855411 stamped on it.
According to BoatWorks.com that corresponds to zinc and would explain why my outdrive suffered some corrosion while in freshwater up in Maine last summer.
I plan on buying a set of magnesium anodes to swap out prior to heading to Maine this summer.

If you boat in fresh water you should consider replacing the zinc anodes with magnesium anodes. They are more reactive and provide greater protection in fresh water.

I ordered the magnesium anodes so I can swap them out prior to heading to Maine and freshwater in July. Here in Florida I boat in the Indian River which is considered brackish but is very close to saltwater in salinity so I use zinc there. Since it is easy to swap the anodes I will now carry both magnesium and zinc.

Put a little marine grease on the threads of the bolts, so they do not seize in place, I leave my boat in salt water for 6 months out of the year and the bolts always come out....

How often (or when) should you replace them? I need to go look at mine, but not sure I had noticed any issues. My boat is on a trailer in a garage when not being used.

When the anodes are close to 50% depleted, replace them.

Anodes can also get a chalky white oxide coating on them. I like to hit them with sandpaper every spring to be sure they are ready for the water.

If you are boating in brackish water you should be using aluminum, not zinc.

I checked the salinity maps of the Northern Indian River Lagoon where I do my Florida boating. With sea water at 35 ppt as a reference the lagoon varies from a low of 20 ppt in the rainy season to near 35 ppt in the dryer season. So, if you were boating in this area would you use zinc or aluminum anodes? Are there any downsides to the choice?
