Oil change pump

I am going to buy an oil change pump and do the change myself this spring. What do others recommend to do the job?

I use this Moeller manual pump. I have found many uses besides boat engine oil change, and approx 1/3 the cost of the electric oil change pump / pails.

Very timely thread... I was just trying to do some research about these pumps in order to do my own oil changes. I had seen that model from West Marine, looks like a nice one. Also was considering purchasing one of these Mityvac models from Amazon. Anyone have any experience with this brand? The "plus" model seems to have the ability to dispense fluids as well as extract. Is this a marketing ploy or is there really some extra functionality that allows you to dispense fluids with these type of pumps. I was thinking that I could use a pump like this to change the gear lube oil as well. What do you guys think about that idea?

While the motor dipstick tube routes to the bottom of the oil pan, the out drive does not have a path for you to get a suction tube to the bottom of the gearbox to completely suck out all the gear oil. So my answer would be "No" not a good idea

FWIW, Ive had the pump in the picture (the taller one) for about 3 years and that little baby is PRICELESS!!

Not only do I use it on the boat, but every year I siphon out the trans fluid on my car (it has no filter to change). Ive done many other projects with the pump and it works great. Very solidly built.

I use the Topsider, it works pretty well, I adapted a garden hose fitting to the suction tube so I don't have to use the thin tube that you slide down the engine dipstick. The garden hose fitting (screws onto the threads at the top of the dipstick tube) works better because it's a much larger diameter.

Good call on the garden hose fitting Lou - never thought of that. Should be able to suck the sump out in a flash compared to doing it through a 3/8" tube. Will definately try this next time I change oil. Cool...

I also use the Topsider for other jobs, the thin tube works well when I change the auto trans fluid on my old 98 Jeep with the the old school 42RE Torqueflite, with no drain on the pan. Normally you will make a mess doing this job. What I do is jack up the Jeep so the trans fluid runs to the corner with the dipstick tube. Then slide the tube down and suck out most of the fluid. Only one quart or so is left in the pan so you can do the job without making a big mess. I also made an adaptor out of copper tubing so I can use it to suck the gear oil out of the differentials on the Jeeps as well. That also makes it much less messy, you can get nearly all the oil out, then remove the cover if you want and clean out the diff.
