When you say you got a click when trying to start, do you mean the click of the key in the switch, or the click of a weak starter solenoid? Some engines have both a solenoid on the starter and a separate assist solenoid, because of the distance from the switch to the starter. Read through this troubleshooting section on iboats, it will help you figure it out. I wound up replacing my starter solenoid last year, water dripped on it from the manifold drain and rusted the terminals pretty bad, and I was getting the click about every 8-10 starts...now all better...

OK, I tried mine last night. A "07" Volvo, WITH the lanyard pulled out, it will non turn over. On Mercs, it will trun over but will not start. Interresting!!

My 99 volvo wil not do anything with the lanyard un hooked. No guages, no electrical, nothing.

Not sure if this helps or not, but now whenever something doesn't happen - like starting - I always check the reset button first.

Thanks guys, just to sort of cap out this thread for future readers;

the boat was taken to the marina, where the diagnosed a bad starter. Starter was replaced, and we are picking the boat up this afternoon.
