2000 180 3.0 VP. Was sitting.

Got the engine started with these little muffs that were on the trailer, had some corrosion on the dist pickups, cleaned that...fired right up. Sounds beautiful.

Problem #1:
Water was tricking out the prop, but water pump hoses were stiff. Temp went to 180. Shut off. Removed thermostat. I couldn't push it open with all my might, now water flows nicely.

Problem #2:
Water flows good, but gauge will rise to 180 degrees and would keep climbing, I shut it off but water temp exiting boat feels around 100-120 degrees. Engine itself doesn't feel that hot.

Is there a special procedure to using muffs on a volvo penta? It's whatever came with the boat... single sided ones. Just for shats and giggles I undid the exit side hose of the pump and it's pushing water out when the engine is started, but nothing stronger then what the hose is putting out naturally (at idle).

As I hit enter to submit this, I'm going to remove the impeller.

No clue. On my jon boat's 3.5 nissan the impeller looked in better shape then that, and it would just spit water randomly. Changed impeller, perfect stream of water.

This is kinda doing the same. Revv it up, just as steady out the back as it was at idle (hose pressure).

Is there anything to block off? I'm just putting muffs over the holes in the back (single sided ones) and it will rock 180 after like 10-15mins.

Nice pic. I would say it's bad, as in past time to replace, but not bad in terms of causing your problem. I suspect some kind of blockage somewhere since it's still overheating without a 'stat.

I agree with Jimbo about the fins looking odd on that impeller though. Almost deformed.

I think I'd put a new impeller and a new 'stat in and try it again. Make sure your garden hose is connected well and turned way up so you get full flow into the drive. If it still overheats, think blockage.

I would say its bad. Note how the one fin at 4:00 is going the wrong way. The one at 6:00 is bent too far over. Now you have 10 out of 12 fins working. From 11:00 to 1:00 the fins are more straight. That will give it a better seal against the pump housing. Now it will over heat more at, say at 800 to 1200 RPMs & do better at higher speeds. Ric, did you find this to be true? Was the boat not used for a long time?

You can pull you t-stat and put it in a pot on your stove to see if it opens. 180 (on a gauge) isn't that bad. How long was it at 180? Did you give it enough time for the thermostat to open? Not too boats operate at 100-120 degrees. Check the manual for the operating range.

The veins on the impeller are usually bent and not straight to ensure a seal. I'd replace that right away.

Do you have a temperature gun?? Mine runs at 175F normally, so 180 isn't that much over. Just saying, if your gage is reading a little off.... You should check your manual for the operating range, and check the actual temperature of the hoses.

However.... With the T-stat removed, you should be moving water fairly freely, and not be able to get over about 120F.

yes, seemed to run cooler at higher rpms, and when it went back to idle it would heat up quickly.

I also heard it could just be the gauge/sender? It has the indivudual VDO's and theres a many posts from fourwinns owners complaining about overheating and it's really just a bad gauge.

Harbor Fright sees a reasonably decent IR thermometer gun. Point the laser at a spot and it'll tell you the temp. They're great for pinning down exactly where a heat difference exists. A temp gun pointed at the temp sensor location is a good way to rule out the gauge being wonky. Well, supposedly you can supply a particular amount of resistance to the gauge circuit and verify that it's working properly. But then you'd have to know the resistance values, have resistors or a tester handy and pull apart the wiring to do it. Or you buy the IR gun and point it at the sensor on the engine.

Just because this particular impeller looks good doesn't mean there aren't pieces of past ones lurking in there.

Unless it's a bad gauge my bet would be on blockages.

Did a high pressure (hose clamped on) flush of the system for 15-20 minutes. So much black crap came out, at least 1lb of black dirt or whatever. One line was completely blocked...the front manifold hose. Installed a new impeller and fired it up....

Ran at 130 degrees for 20 minutes in the driveway, works perfect. When I get more $$ I'll install a thermostat.

Thanks guys :) I lost my ramp key it's been so long, I'm waiting for a neighbor to come home with one so I can go play in the lake.

I'd call that a total of $1700 well spent!

nice job trouble-shooting! You can always use a master key for the ramp lock (otherwise known as bolt cutters) :twisted:

runs great! It may or may not have a slow leak, it may have been left over water from the hours of washing cause how it sits in the water is A LOT steeper then how it sits on the trailer.

The bilge pump is broken, I'm going to eat dinner and run to wally's world and get one. I have it tied to the dock and marked where the water is and when I go back in later I'll see if it moved.

Awesome running boat, used a tad less then 1/8th tank running around for 2 hours. Cruises really nicely, but def a lake/flat seas boat.

Just wondering what you hose clamped on to flush the system, and where? I need to work on mine tomorrow because of an overheating issue. Thanks.
