I've got a high pitched squeel noise coming from the front of my engine occasionally. Never there right when we start it up, or over 1500 RPMs. It comes and goes, and today I sprayed a quick shot of WD40 on all pullies while it was squeeling, and no difference.

That leads me to believe its the water pump causing it...as thats the only one I couldn't squirt with WD-40. Took it off today and no major noise, but then it doesn't make the noise until the engine has been running a while.

Any other ideas before I order a new water pump?

When you take off the belt, spin the pulleys of all of the accessories including any idler pulleys and feel for roughness in the bearings. Sometimes you will feel the roughness before you will hear noise. I have found that the engine circulating pumps on the front of the engine last a LONG time, I just replaced the OE on my 88 last fall, it was making noise, not leaking yet. And sometimes its just the belt itself, the rubber eventually gets hard and cracked and they make noise.

Thanks Lou. I saw that during a search which has me wondering. Belt is new, put it on last year. All pullies spin fine. The only one making any noise at all was the water pump and I know that was water inside it that was moving around.

Alternator pulley made a bit of noise, but when I sprayed that directly with the WD40, it did not change.

FWIW, the boat sat for almost two years, unused, and I do remember the noise when we sea-trial it. It has come and go a lot, but only at off idle speeds in gear.

fire- Do the pulleys have any rust???? And is there any noticable "Black-powder" around the belt area??

No rust, a little bit of black stuff on the water pump now that its off. Could have been dust.

So the VP pump is $160, Sierra pump is $87 shipped, and O'Reilly matched it up to a pump off a pump off a '66 Chevy. $35 and a lifetime warranty. Only thing is the Sierra pump is bi-directional, whereas the O'Reilly pump is standard direction, same as crankshaft....

If you are selling the boat shortly, paint the automotive pump to match and buy it. If you plan on keeping the boat for another year, buy the Sierra. If your keeping the boat till you turn 30 years old, buy the OEM pump.

Is this a serp belt set up? If so this may sound weird, but we used to do it at the car dealership I worked at. Use some Comet powder cleaner and sprinkle it on the pulleys while she is running. It acts as a sanding compound to clean the pulleys. Its a cheap thing to try first before replacing parts.

There's no definate timeframe. Is the OEM pump that much better than the Sierra? FWIW, all the pics look identical besides paint on all three pumps.



Yes it is. What part of the pulley would I sprinkle it on?

Unless you've got closed cooling, I'd buy either marine pump, not the automotive one as the marine ones have a corrosion resistant impellor and backplate. Tha automotive pump is designed for running with an antifreeze/ water mix, which contains corrosion inhibitors ( even in '66 Chevy I'd guess !). Even if it's used only in fresh water, the automotive one would rust.

Definitely use a marine pump if raw water cooled even in fresh water you will get premature corrosion. The OE circulating pump lasted 22 years on my 88. I replaced it last fall with a Sierra one because it was starting to make noise. Still didn't leak. The only tricky part of that job is removing the pulley from the old one, you may need a pulley puller to get it off, I sprayed Kroil around the mounting area and tapped it off gently. Put some grease on the mounting area in case I ever have to replace this one....

What did your surveyor say in the survey about the noise ? What were his suggestions?

Just sprinkle it on one of the bigger pulleys or something towards the top so you don't make to much of a mess. The belt will grabe it and run it through the whole system as it goes around each pulley.
