I was in the Coast Guard for eight years, it's standard procedure to take charge of the weapon, what would you do?
I assume your asking what I would do if the CG boarded my boat and held my gun during the search. I guess I would be polite, courteous, and respectful to them just like I always am. I'm sure once the gun registration and conseal/carry permit cleared there would be no problems.
I view my boat as my second home, although small it has all the amenities of a simple dwelling. I guess even big brother views my boat as a second home since I write it off on my taxes as such. With this being said I feel I have the same rights to protect my family while staying at our "second home" as long as I'm a legal gun owner with proper doc's and in Indiana or reciprical territorys of the conseal/carry permit. This by no means means I'm some gun toting lunatic who gets drunk, howls at the moons, and fires off shots. Like I said earlier it is a rare occasion that the gun even makes it to the boat....only when the wife and I will be in an isolated area! In general I think guns have no place on a boat other than this one circumstance...at least for us.
I want to be very clear that all this gun talk has nothing to do with the title of the post. I side tracked it and that was my fault. It wouldn't even cross my mind to pull a gun on anyone because of wake, whistling at my wife, cutting me off, drinking my last beer, ect. Someone could literaly ram my boat on purpose and I would not pull the gun....thats what police and insurance are for!
qweedqwag- I'm curious what the official CG stance is on a LEGAL gun owner having a firearm on the boat? I called them a while back to ask but the young man who answered the phone was unsure what to tell me, so he directed me to the ATF. Called them and the guy who answered said I would have to try back for two other agents who might know because he wasn't sure. It seems like someone should have given me a clear cut answer...right?
