how is everyone? im in topeka ks and just bought a 2001 190 horizon with the 5.0gl volvo/penta. 64 hours on it.

anyways i got a few questions if anyone can help

1. the stupid vdo cluster is dead already, i ordered a 7 gauge kit from teleflex, are there going to be any problems throwing the vdo in the trash and installing these? Im manily worried about the temp and oil senders.

2. after the gauges are all working like they are suppose too, are my engine alarms going to still work or is that option bascally dead.

3. I went to repack the wheel bearings tonight, I went to every parts house in town and cannot find the original rear grease seals with the spring.(standard 1.917 ID) Will the ones without the spring be ok? Anyone know where to get the seals for a good price?

thanks for all the help and i will post some pictures of my boat tomarrow, cannot wait to take me safety class and then enjoy my new boat.

Another Kansan. You'd think we have lakes around here or something.

You really want the spring reinforced seals. If you ever get over to KC, Croft Trailer Supply has all that kind of stuff. I don't know if NAPA carries those, but it would be worth checking.

Did you buy from a dealer or individual? Welcome to the board, but we do have a rule here. You have to post pictures of your boat!

Yep, these seals can be difficult to get, however I get mine from Champion Trailers - great to deal with and not expensive.

http://www.championtrailers.com/bearings_races_seals.html

Scroll down the page, and you'll find these seals for $2.20 each.

It's important you get the correct seals with the double lip and springs - especially if you have the Spindle Lube hubs or the grease will ooze out all over your brakes after just a few miles. Don't ask how I know...!

WELCOME!!

Senders in them selfs, generally do not fail. I would just replace the gauges and them take it from there. As to the alarms, it lest on the newer boats, the alarms are controlled be the engine computer.

If by "parts house" you mean O'Reilly, NAPA, Autozone, Advance, etc. I have found those to be sometimes tricky and/or unreliable when it comes to trailer stuff. As Mike suggested, I'd look for a Croft Trailer equivalent in Topeka-you're going to do a lot better with a trailer shop.

thanks for the help everyone, i looked in the phone book and found a trailer shop. They have about 20 of them in stock at 3.49 each. Guess who gets to do bearings tonight? 8) hopefully my gauges will get here early next week. im kind of afraid to take the boat out with working gauges, I guess i still have the alarms but I like to know whats going on with the engine at all times

I agree with getting those guages working before motoring.....as far as the alarm - that will not be of much help since from what i understand - it will sound then the guessing game will start as to what in the hell it means.

Temp, oil pressure and rpm are huge in my book and i keep a constant eye on them. FYI - i recommend getting an infared therm meter and hit the therm housing to see how it compares to your guage. Theyre cheap and you can use it to measure your exhaust manifold temps also.

just a little update, love the boat

1. gauge swap was no problem, all gauges work just fine with the stock senders. Found out my trim sender is dead but after seeing the replacement price of the sender im just going to leave it be. I ran the hour meter up manualy on a battery to reflect the hours the vdo cluster was reading before it died. The only thing i had to change over was remove the paddle wheel for the speedo and replace it with a pitot tube. Also had to buy a new depth finder, got a hawkeye indash style, we will see how it works.

2. All alarms work just fine :D

3. Found myself a local trailer shop and they had the seal in stock for $3.49 each. And its a regualr stocked item :D

here is a pic!!!!

Great looking boat mate! I am in need of a paddle wheel for me speedo... Mine came off the boat after a interaction with a submerged stump. Anyway you would be willing to hook me up with the one you removed from your boat?

Thanks in Advance!

remi_357 has got it right in his first month as a boat owner. Step 1 buy boat, step 2 start spending money on boat

Great boat, and sounds like a deal with only 64 hours. It must motor pretty well with the V8.

How much did you get the new gauges for? Is it a replacement panel or did you fabricate the mounting? Would love to see a picture of how you replaced the dreaded VDO cluster.

i had to fabricate the panel my self, it not the prettiest thing in the world. My plan is to make it look extremely nice over the winter time, i didnt want much down time this summer so i just threw it together real quick. ill post a picture after work. I bought the gauges on ebay for $200. Here is a link to the exact ones i bought http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TELEFLEX ... iesQ5fGear
