Started enjoying my new boat last Friday on Lake Mead with my gal when I noticed it hesitated for a second or two when I shifted into forward. In the next hour or two, it would work fine on occassion, then start to take even longer to engage. When I got to "10 elephants" before it would go into gear, I decided it was time to put her back on the trailer. Neutral and reverse would function without hesitation. I was able to get my gal onto the dock but was having a heck of a time trying to put her on the trailer that she backed down into the water. After getting hit by a gust of wind and going from reverse to forward, I was helpless as forward would not kick in and I drifted straight back into a sandy berm near the shore. I quickly turned off the engine and jumped out and with help pushed off and was able to restart and get into forward and ultimately got her trailered up. Had minor paint scrapes off the bottom of the grey drive, and a few dimples and rough burrs on the duo props. Hate to think what would have happend if I hadn't shut her off so quickly.

Took her back to my marine mechanic which is also where I store my boat. I have known this mechanic for about 20 years and he has clients coming to him from three states due to his knowledge and honesty. Since there is not a Four Winns service provider in my area, they have graciously allowed him to cover any warranty work since day one without any problems whatsoever. He works around the clock on Friday into Saturday trying to get me back on the lake, even swapping parts from an identical brand new outdrive he has in his shop that has never been in the water. Upon determing that my outdrive will become a problem that will be a major recall in 6 months, I give up and head back to Huntington Beach on Sunday. NOW FOR THE REALLY BAD NEWS. Call Volvo Penta Of America first thing Monday morning, and they say my mechanic is not "Volvo Certified" and they will not allow him to service my drive. They say I can go to a dealer in Incline Village (500 mies away -12 hour tow) or Arizona ( only about a 3 hour tow), but regardless, they aren't responsible for getting me there as the contract states its my responsibility. I tell them after 27 hours, I don't feel like wasting the rest of the summer on the trailer. Well, after two days of "dealing" with them, and I should add that the only person that would talk to me or call me back was an assistant named "Margaret" who was reading emails from a Mr. Leon Baylor who never did respond to my request to talk to me personally. At this point, I contact Four Winns in Michigan.

NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS. If there was ever a Four Winns God or Angel, his name would be Bill Krueger in warranties. He immediately stepped up to the plate and is shipping me a brand new outdrive directly to my mechanic as I speak. After speaking to Mr. Baylor himelf and getting nowhere, he decided my summer was worth more than waiting 6 weeks and arguing with VP over a 27 hour old drive they wanted to argue contract with. I always want to do things by the book, too, but how many of us would buy a new boat if you knew the drive would go out before you got your first spot on your new carpet? It is people like Bill Krueger that has me on my third Four Winns and when I'm ready for a new Vista, I won't be shopping other manufacturers, just different models of Four Winns. Four Winns has shown me that they are more than just selling you a boat. Bill is not alone in warranties, over the years I have also dealt with a Mr. Ralph Hoskins, cut from the same cloth as Bill. If Volvo Penta of America had folks like Bill Krueger and Ralph working for them instead of "Leon Baylors", you probably wouldn't be able to google their name and find dozens of lawsuits associated with them.

That sucks! But I'm glad you're getting the issue squared away. That must have been something serious to require a whole new drive. Based on the symptoms you described, I thought for sure it was going to be a linkage issue that they could fix. Good luck on the new drive.

Mike, your right. Bill and Ralph are the best. And, I'm not just agreeing with you because my family's from Ks! There are few (if any) other boating companies that would not have said....sorry, not our fault, deal with Volvo. I had a few problems last year when I took delivery and not once did Bill hesitate to do what it took to get things right. I'm even getting a call tomorrow letting me know when the truck will pull into Boulder City, Nv. I had plans next week with family and friends flying in for a boating vacation and thanks to Bill, I should be driving my boat.

JDW, my shift is cableless and it's part of the new electronic vessel control package. It has no cables that go from the shifter to the engine/drive, just servos. When you put the shift in forward, it would move the linkage appropriately on the engine and outdrive, but it would not allow the brass shifter to kick the paddle up to the inner sheave to engage forward. Visually, it worked fine. Internally, it sounds like something was "mis" machined from the get go, or even worse, my mechanic thinks there's a serious problem with a brass shifter that was just changed after having worked fine the way it was for about the last forty years.

Needless to say, think about the foul language bleeped out in just one episode of Deadliest Catch, and it wouldn't come close to what I've said and think about VP in the last 48 hours.....

Got a phone call from Mr. Paul Ryno, the parts and accessories manager at Four Winns, who gave me tracking numbers and said my new outdrive is on its way to me and will arrive by next Wednesday. Paul is another great contact that goes above and beyond and a great resource for parts info.

My mechanic promises to have my new drive installed and put me back in the water when I arrive on Saturday. Two weeks from time of break down to water skiing, including freighting the outdrive. Pretty darn good in my book..........

There's a lot of new boats being bought and it will be interesting to see if they have any similar problems. Hope my heads up will at least let them know they aren't the only one if it does happen to them.

Good to know they will stand behind their warranty. I'm 4 hours into my 2011 SL242 with no issues yet. (knocks on wood).

You've got a beautiful boat! That navy hull on the SL looks great. Not only did Four Winns stand behind their warranty, their standing in for Volvo Penta's.

I hope you don't go through what I did...

New outdrive arrived from Four Winns Michigan on Tuesday and was installed yesterday. My mechanic called and said it started up and went into gear instantly (as it should) and I'm all set to go. I'm going out this weekend for a two family boating trip and can still hardly believe I will have my new boat back so soon.

Volvo Penta and Tiarra just had to pay out $1.1 million to a guy in Ventura, Ca that had four failures in the first 66 hours and finally sued under the Ca "lemon law" act and won. Sounds like Tiarra got dragged in the lawsuit as an guilt by association (with VP) and the problems were soley that of Volvo Penta.

No matter how well made things are, there are always going to be mistakes and problems. It's fantastic when a company puts you first and goes the extra mile to make things right. Thank you Four Winns for getting me back on the water!

Good to hear that FW stepped up and helped out....
About the no cable, servos design...what happens when the servo fails, do you get warning (like a check engine light)...sounds like drive by wire, my 07 Jeep has this on the 5.7 Hemi and it is very smooth, but has an odd 'dead' feeling to it off the line...

Glad to hear you'll get her wet this weekend. Treat that mechanic well. Getting that kind of turn around this time of year is awesome! Combine that with the way he went to bat for you, and it sounds like you have a winner.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll report back next week how she ran. I've been boating since I was 8 years old, but I still get excited every time I put a boat in the water. This new one has been my favorite...kind of like save the best for last. Getting waaay toooo old for the old flat bottoms I grew up with and all of the constant work it took to keep them running. It's so nice to touch a button when the noise gets on your nerves and you're suddenly running almost stealth.

Lou, hope I'll never find out what happens if the servo's fail. They're going electronic everywhere now. My buddy's new full dress Harley has the same throttle set up as my boat, no cables. One thing about them, they're very smooth. No effort to hit WOT or come back down to neutral.

My old drive (with all of 27 hours on it) is getting shipped back to Four Winns. I am so thankful they did not hesitate to stand tall when Volvo wouldn't. From notitication of problem to new drive delivered 2000 miles away, it was only 10 days! Don't think I won't raise a few to the good folks in Cadillac, Michigan this weekend.....
