I have a 2002 Four winns Horizon. Boat runs great ! We wake board all day on her and cruise quite a bit. Here is my situation, 2 times this year I have run her at wide open throttle and both times I had an audio alarm from engine room. Both Oil pressure and water temp gauges are OK at the time of alarm.
When i throttle back it goes off.

Any Ideas ???

Which model? Engine/drive?

5.7 GXI-C with Dual-prop

Any idea what the RPM's were at the time of the alarms? What prop set and gear ratio are you running?

Around 2500-300 rpm's
As far as prop set and gear ratio I will have to investigate, the boat stays in the water so it might be tough getting the prop info.

think about the exhaust riser temp sensors. First check to see that the wire connectors are secure, on the sensors. If they are, you may be getting an early warning for a weak raw water pump impeller. In this case, the risers would be getting too hot after a bit of higher RPM running. We had this last season. You could run all day just fine, bt when crossing the lake ... running at 3000 to 3500 RPM for 15 minutes (or so), the alarm would sound and it would actually cut power. The temp gauge reading normal (as well as all other gauges). Let it idle and it would then be fine and then go at speed for another 15 minutes or so.

In replacing the impeller it actually looked fine, so I wasn't so sure. However, the issue has not returned after the replacement.

I'll second the idea of cooling starvation. When you crank up the RPMs you're pulling a lot more water. If the flow rate drops you're going get alarms. Various things come to mind, impeller, sea strainer or weak hoses. If the hoses are old and get soft it's possible for them to collapse under the suction pressure of greater flow rates. Everything might 'look good' but they'll feel much softer than new hoses would.

Since it's a 2002, how recently (if ever) were the exhaust rises/manifolds replaced? They do corrode eventually and get blocked.

I will investigate the impellar and hoses over the coming winter. I will also check the wiring on the sensors.
Are the sensors on the exhaust manifold ??

The info here is great. Just an update, I pulled the boat before Irene comes knocking and saw what might be the source of my troubles. There are a lot of barnacles growing inside the prop ! So after the storm first job is to remove the prop and clean out the growth.

Good thought, but I'd still recommend replacing the impeller unless you know it's been done in the last 2 years (or less, if you put a lot of hours on her).

Do the impeller/sea water pump for sure! Make look in the drive (where your water pick up is) with a flashlight to see if there is any growth inside as well....
