I'm looking at buying a 2012 f244 with a 5.7 dual prop. First time buyer and boat owner. Went out for a test drive and the motor made loud, noise when going out of neutral. Salesrep says it's common due to large swim platform. Any idea?

That doesn't sound right.

WTF does the swim platform have to do with that? My starboard engine has always made a clunking noise when putting or taking it out of gear (more so when putting her in reverse). Been that way for almost 11 years now. Better tight than loose.

Doesn't sound right to me. It should make a brief, not especially loud, chunk sound as it slips into gear. I dont know what the platform has to do with the sound the engine makes. If the sound makes you cringe, it aint right.

Thanks for the responses. Going back tomorrow again b/c we like the layout and hear good things about the manufacturer. See if the sound changes (or the story)!!!

I call BS on this one, a dual prop drive be it either Merc B3 or a Volvo DP has a cone clutch and they are known to be smooth and quiet shifting. A dog clutch drive such as a Merc Alpha or OMC Cobra can clunk or thunk into gear, if the idle is set too high, but my 24 year old Cobra shifts very smooth because the idle is set like it should be, about 550 rpm. Don't buy the boat unless they fix it...
