I'm thinking of replacing my well worn factory carpet in the off season. I've put four seasons on the existing carpet and we spend a lot of hours on the boat. The backing is starting to stick to the fiberglass underneath and peeling off leaving black stains. First of all I'd like to hear opinions on what you think the best replacement would be. Would you try to order factory replacement carpet or go with custom carpet? I know Firecadet replaced his a while back and I have seen his and like the look. My existing carpet is lay in and does not need snaps. I kind of like style and wouldn't mind sticking with that. I'd also like to hear what experience you have had with vendors. I have all winter to do this so I would think now might be a good time to purchase the carpet. There has to be some kind of off season specials out there.

Hey Flyer,
I just ordered some new carpet for my cockpit for the same reason. The black is starting to come off the backing and it is getting everywhere. Mine is not snap in either, I have 4 pieces in my 348. I wanted the teak looking carpet that I have seen on a lot of newer boats. I ordered it just last week and over the winter, I am going to install it. Its not cheap, but it looks and feels amazing. It does not have the black backing, it has something else that helps drain the water better. Everytime the kids would walk on the carpet, it took days to dry it out when it was in the boat. Her is the link to the carpet website I ordered it from. I ordered the black teak (brown with black lines). I am going to have it cut and bound here from someone local since I already have the original patterns. Anything else you need, let me know.
Thanks
C

Instead of replacing your carpets due to the rubber backing coming off, you may want to try using a rubber coating product called "Plasti Dip". It worked great for me, as my carpets were fine but the rubber backing was wearing down and leaving a mess all over with the rubber coming off. I brushed it on using a paint brush and three seasons later, none of the new painted rubber has come off and the carpets still have flexiblity (i.e rolled up to get into the engine compartments many times). The product has many uses (mostly to cover metal with rubber but works great on boat carpets with rubber backing. I thought you may want to know this. Saved me alot of $.

That'd be a LOT of Plasti-Dip. As much as new carpet?

This Plasti-Dip topic has been covered many times here. The Plasti-Dip to cover all your carpets is less than 1/3 the cost of new replacement carpets. But it does not last forever either. Just a Band-Aid .

I did all my cockpit carpets for $60 of plasti-Dip. Thats alot cheaper and the carpets have lasted two full seasons with no deteriation, should last many more seasons. The galley carpets did not require it as the rubber backing is still fine. I don't understand why they put rubber underneath in the first place. Everyone complains after 5 years that the rubber is now coming off a making a big mess. Plasti-Dip does work.

Summerays how did u like the carpet? I am thinking of ordering the same. Does it stay down and not slide without the rubber backing?

In boating in salt water I find it not worth having the carpet. I went with this stuff in the cockpit area. It holds no water at all and will not move out of place. It can be custom made to match the boats curves, you can cut it to fit or just but square pads.

I don't use my carpet for that exact reason, the black was making a mess. One gallon is $60 ordered online, sounds like a good idea!!

My plan is to go the plasdeck route next winter. Might be a bit overkill for an 18ft bow rider, but new carpet is what... $500? Plasdeck installed on an 18ft is what... $800? and doesn't trap moisture, bugs, and cleans in seconds compared to a white gelcoat floor.

I was going to go with the new carpet and decided to go nu-teak in the cockpit and the swim platform. It was pretty expensive, but i decided to spend a lot of money over the winter on the boat with the electronics and engine work. I will be posting some pics here soon of the work being done. The electronics are going in this week. I did order carpet samples from that company and didnt like the feel of it. The original carpet that was in the boat was very thick and nice, but also had the problem with the black backing and it did take forever to dry. The Nu-Teak is incredible and looks amazing.

The Nu-teck is GREAT looking!! They were at the N.E. Boat Show. Its about, $30 to $35 a sq./ft. 3 years ago when I looked into it? Too pricey for me!!!

We are pricing carpet from a local shop and have started a discussion with our mechanic about removing our flexi-teak on our swim platform. Think carefully about anything on your swim platform. I would get a sample and put it in the sun. We have tried for 3 summers to deal with it and its too hot. Doing a carpet over the teak on the swim platform was too crazy.

The cost of factory replacement carpet to our local shop was within $100.00 for a much better grade of carpet with an aqua lock backing. we think that's the way we will be going.

The same problem with Seadek, unless you go with the lighter colors. Even at that, for me, it get a little warm but I find the trade off worth it. More so since it is non-slip and at the helm it has a little bounce to it if I am standing for a time.

Good to know. We did look at Seadek as another option but after thinking about it, going back to gelcoat seems to be the best idea.

FW passed on the proper gel color and non skid particles they use.
