Calling on you experts out there to let me know if it's possible to change my Volvo penta 5.7 sx drive to a duo prop even if it means changing drives( if that's even possible). I just feel
Like a duo prop would help docking and backing in my slip. I've seen newer 238's than mine with duo props. Can this be done?
Shipfaced

P.S. Shipfaced is a 1997

I have never heard of it being done, but who am I?? NO ONE!! I think the amount of $$$ would not be worth it. It could be the same cost or a little more for a newer boat with counter rotating props. The two props alone are about $1,000 for a set.

Absolutely!!! Especially easy (not cheap) being a Volvo.. the upper half of the drive is the same on a SX and DP drive.. so all it involves is changing the lower half of the drive and then getting the props pitched right. We have done it on a few 298 Vistas and it has made a huge difference!!!

Your boat would do wheelies.

$6158 plus shipping for the complete conversion kit without props for a small block engine. Apparently the SX and DP-S share the same upper, it's just the lower gear assembly that's different. SWEET!!!!

SX to DPS conversion kit:
http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/cobraconversion.htm
Each kit contains the following items: Intermediate Shaft, Bearing Retainer, Quad Ring, SX-C1, 2 0-Rings, Water Pickup Tube Grommet, Water Pickup Tube, Tube Retainer, Seal, Anode (w/ screws and washers) and the entire lower gear assembly.

Install yourself, shouldn't be hard. I'd look for a used one, probably find a lower for under 3k.

Holy Cash Batman. That sound like a deal breaker for me. Cheaper to buy a 20hp outboard and mount it at the bow for backing up. Boat would handle like a forklift.

20hp? You're nuts. Pick up one of those small self contained outboard.. like a old Nissan NS3.5a. Had one on my 12ft steel jon boat. Moved it like scalded dog and weighed 28lb fueled up. Roughly 150lb thrust. That'll dock just about anything.

I did not think that the upper unit could be used. So I was thinking that the total cost plus labor would be in the 10 to 12k range. I am sure that the $6158 will turn into $6.5 to 7k add labor $1,500. Is it worth it?? If you needed a drive, yes, but just to do it. Or put the money into a newer boat.

yes it can be done as already posted. When my friend bought his H200, it came from FW with DP, to get price where he wanted, dealer offered to swap out DPS with an SX. That made the deal. Takes a good mechanic a few minutes to swap..... If mechanic had to split upper / lower outdrive and reassemble with new DPS lower half, maybe couple hours with a break!

I personally thought friend was nuts going backwards to a SX..... but he go a boat :D

If you could find entire used DPS, could swap drives in less than an hour and have a back up drive.....
This would be as easy, remove hyd rams, 6 nuts holding drive to transom housing, swap

DPS would make you boat more desirable come time to sell.

The DP would be a great conversion, the issue is the cost of the lower unit and the props. As long as you can get all the bolts loose that hold the upper and lower units together, it should not be a hard job. Once you get out those bolts, the only things holding the units together are the o-rings and the water tube gaskets, as long as the splines for the driveshaft are not rusted.
