Are you going to leave your boat in the water or pull it out when not in use. My boat has never stayed in the water " hints why it is such great shape" the boat has always had the cover on it. Hopefully your boat will not have any soft spots and if it doesn't they you will be fine. So where about are you from. I'm in Columbus Ohio. We are just going to run in some local lakes. May take it up to lake erie. My father in law has a house on Middle Bass Island so we will ferry it out to the island and run about the islands this summer. Congrats on finding your boat and make sure you have a great time boating.

I was told it wasn't in the water the whole summer. I didn't find any soft spots when I looked at it. I am from Pittsburgh Pa and the boat will not be docked in the water. I will be trailering it and pulling it out. I will be using the boat on the three rivers near Pittsburgh and I have a camp up near Warren Pa and will be using it on the Allegheny Reservoir / Kinzu Dam, Tionesta Lake and Lake Chautauqua in New York. Anyone know a good online source for PFD's/life vests and boating accessories and Trailer Tires !!!!!

Leaving it in the water is a non issue as far as rot goes, unless you can store it inside a garage. Reason being, when my boat is in the water and has the bow and cockpit covers on it, the natural motion of the boat, results in water not pooling on the cover. So there is never water in the boat, even from rain, unless it is a torrential down pour. Now when it's stored in the driveway on the trailer, unless it's perfectly level, water gets in with those covers. Why I hate carpet. But with my winter storage cover it stays dry.

You want the boat to dry out. Do not cover it if you can help it if the carpet is damp. When it's stored, every so often open it up and let it air out.

If you get the boat, see how wet the carpets get when you have it stored on the trailer. If they are damp much of the time, I'd get rid of them and get the deck gelcoated or painted with a marine quality deck paint. Then when you replace all the seats, put some sealer in the screw holes to keep the moisture out. If the covers keep out water to the point where the carpets are not damp, then don't worry about it. Just air it out when you can.

Think of how long the floor would last, in a convertible, with a leaky top and carpet on the floor. A recipe for rust n rot. I had a VW Dune Buggy with a convert top back in the 70s, I threw out the carpet, rust proofed the frame and floor pan and painted it with non skid paint. What water got in dried up fast.
That's what these old school boats are like. Ditch the carpet if you can.....

Every week I take my covers off for a day to dry things out. Ever since I started doing that I've had zero mold issues. Of course today is damp and kinda rainy.. and i left the covers off yesterday after being in the water all day not looking at the weather forecast. Ooops.
