Any idea what gear ratio for the '06 Vista 278 with a VP 8.1l DP was? My Volvo service invoice has 1.78:1 is this correct?
The spec sheet includes most detail (prop etc) but not the gear ratio?
I have replaced my engine 8.1l with a new 5.7l GXI but something is not right as all I could achieve this weekend was 2200 rpm. First I thought it was the prop size but the boat was offered with this engine option and an F4 prop.... My woes continue.... <sets more cash alight>

The gear ratio for the 5.7 & 8.1 are not the same. The 1.78 for the 8.1 is correct, for the 5.7 it will be lower (numerically higher). Both 1.95 and 2.30 are available.

There should be a tag on the drive that has the gear ratio.

Why did you repower down from 8.1 to a 5.7?

Have to tried to see if the engine will spin above 2200rpm in neutral?

The OP has had several issues with this boat, and even from the start seemed to be some questions...

Ive just had a survey done on a '06 V278 Im buying in Thailand. It was well worth the USD450 as the surveyor spotted that the engine room had been filled with 20cm of rain water recently. The boat was kept in 'dry stack' and they forgot to take out the hull plug. Anyway it rained and filled up. So looking at it with an untrained eye the engine (and boat) looks great but the surveyor, using a fibre optic probe spotted that the starter engine was on its last legs. Anyway the seller has to replace a few bits before the deal goes through. A 40pg document, new starter, piece of mine... well worth the $450

Good spot!!
Over the last 12 months I have replaced the starter, altenator, charger, batt's, rebuilt the drive and finally (well not finally!!) replaced the engine. Salt water somehow got into 4 of the 8 cylinders supposedly as a result of being towed in after the engine would not start. Volvo here in Singapore charge about 3x US prices for everything so replacing the engine (slight downgrade) was actually a similar price to getting the old engine refurbished. So much for survey peace of mind. Add the above a new prop, Bimini and anti foul and she's should finally be good to go. Happy days...

That boat with a 5.7 vs 8.1 isn't that bad of a performance hit according to the stats. Cruise is only down 4-5mph.

But the drive gear ratio and the props will be different. The 5.7 uses F4 props and the 8.1 needs the F5,s.

Yip, I'm pretty sure I'll need the F4's but am waiting for FW to respond.
Anyone have a contact at FW who may respond? Not getting anything from the websites contact email.
The question is what prop for a V278 5.7l Gxi 320hp with XDP drive and 1.78:1 ratio?

Even with the 1.78:1, normally the 5.7l 278 is 1.98:1....
I only getting 2200rpm do you recon moving from F5 to F4 will get me up to 5000rpm?
