I tried to start my 2001 180 horizon with a 4.3 GL volvo penta engine and outdrive this afternoon. The boat has been in storage all winter and it is time to take her out. When the key is turned to the accessory and start positions the engine alarm goes on and nothing happens with the engine. Just two weeks ago I raised and lowered the prop with no alarm, did not try to start the engine. That changed today. All the gauges come on, the battery checks out fine and all the fluids look good. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Start with the simple things; is the shifter in the neutral position ?

I also have a 2001 180H w/4.3GL. When this happened to me, it turned out to be the Starter Solenoid located under the black plastic cover at the front of the engine. Here is also a link that may help you diagnose what is going on http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167035

My boat does that randomly..

gotta wiggle the key, the starter switch is getting worn out.

Also put it in neutral

Idiot check..... Do you have a lanyard or other safety device that may be the culprit. Mine has also had that interface between the seat and key fail a few times.

Same here last year on a 2001 5.0 Gxi PEFS engine after winter storage. I changed the starter relay based on research here. I was hoping for a quick fix. No dice.

Had to replace the starter. And it was a PITA. Unless u got long arms, I'd suggest u pay someone.

I do have a lanyard. I bypassed the switch to see if it was the cause. No luck. The alarm was still going off.
