Inverter, a bank of 6V batteries, and a small space heater.

Propane heater will kill you. Personally for resale (if you ever sell the boat), I would reinstall the aircon but no genset. Do as the capt says and run a battery bank.

http://www.surplusunlimited.com/

Last time I was there, they had a few complete marine air/heatpump units in good shape for under $1000.

Heck, you can pick up a brand new MarinAire Micra 7000btu unit for $1200 that draws 110v/650w/6a (max). If 7000btu is enough heat for the cabin of your 268... two 400Ah 6v batteries wired in series gives you 12v 400ah of power. Discharge to a safe 50%... you have 200ah of usable power.

200ah of power can run that MarineAire Micra, with inverter loss... easily for 24hrs of constant use! Throw on a good solar charger on the roof/charge it with the boat while it's running.. could easily have a weeks worth of heat/ac before you need to recharge on shore power.

OR

Add a 2nd "charger" alternator on the engine.... charge the deep cycle's off that very fast. Never worry about a generator ever again. Those are old technology :)

You can even get fancy and buy battery "health" monitoring systems with relays that will shut off the aircon/battery bank if they dip below "safe" level to avoid damage, and also give you a real time runtime meter. All this stuff is very inexpensive. Minus the labor you're looking at around $2000 for everything and it gives you more power to run the TV when the boat is off too.

$100 Mr. Buddy heater. We have been using it on our 268 for the last 3 years and in other boats for 10 years before that. Keeps us toasty warm in the cabin down to 16F in the winter. Everyone we boat with in the winter uses one except for the larger boats with diesel furnaces.

I don't think I could sleep well knowing my kids were breathing that stuff in but I did google Mr. Buddy Heater and they are for both indoor and outdoor use. I would use it in the cockpit with the camper canvas on but no way in the cabin. However, it is amazing just how far they have come safety/technology wise these days.

A 100% working propane heater will produce zero carbon monoxides. If the fuel mixture is not exactly 1:24, carbon monoxides are produced.

I would install a carbon monoxide detector next to all sleeping quarters. Also, don't forget.. burning gas takes oxygen. If you're getting headaches I would open a window!

Good god man, is the life if you or your kids worth saving $3000?

I would stay away from Propane because of the carbon monoxide!! More so, I would think you are using the 1lb tanks, yes? The other models use the 20lbers.

Point being that you are going to store LP on your boat. The valves on those small tank do not always seal tight. Propane is heaver than air, no matter were you keep them & if they leak. It will try to go to the lowest point in the boat. That could be the engine compartment!! You must read the U.S.C.G. rules on this.

To me, the inverter is the safer way to go! Ric I am sorry, but your math is off. With 200amh of power, will get less than 3hrs of total use. 650 watts, plus 50 watts (10 to 12% loss) for the inverter, 700watts of DC 12V power is about 65amps.

I have used the Candelier Lantern for over nighting. As for heat, its not that good. It takes the dampness out, a big plus and raises the temp a few degs.

Cheaper to buy, to use, and I don't mind storing wax on board. It just depends on what you want.
