Aussie_H_180, your car is rated to tow that weight? What engine does it have?

That's what the Pontiac G8 car was based off. 350+ HP.
Holden Commodore VE

Pontiac G8 sold here in America. It didn't do good. I blame that 100% on the bastardization of the bumpers. That is a SEXY car, and they removed every bit of sexy and installed big honeycomb plastic grills everywhere. Idiots. Thankfully, A LOT of USA G8 owners are actually ordering and installing the Commodore VE bumpers to make the car look good again.

Seriously guys, come on. "Should match" "Same dilema" Sound like a bunch of women at the mall.
Can you just see the looks from your buddies when you tell them why you passed on a boat or truck cause it didn't match.

I tell my wife that ours match... Red, white & blue. Doesn't get much more patriotic than that combo. Please disregard the yellow stripe.

Ric, I have the SV6 Series 2 Commodore. Rated at 2100kg (4650lb) towing capacity when used with a weight distribution hitch. This car has the GM LLT V6 - rated at 281hp (210kw) - and 6L50 6 speed auto. Tows the boat like an absolute train! Was going to get the 6 liter, but there was issues with my kids driving it... power to weight ratio was so high they were not permitted by the local traffic authorities!

You can still buy the Commodore in left hand drive in the Middle East - badged as Chevy Luminas and Lumina SS. The long wheebase version of this car is the current Chev Caprice police persuit vehicle (PPV) as used by many law enforcement agencies in the US - they are on sale today as either a marked vehicle or a detectives unmarked. Hard to buy as a private individual in the US, but it is do-able! Chev Caprice is also big in the Middle East - as limos and also as highway pursuit vehicles.

Like you said, a great car with great dynamics. I believe it is coming back to the US soon as a Chevy - keep an eye on NASCAR - I think you'll see it there first, then in the showrooms.

While the exact same car, sold as a Pontiac G8 in the US was only rated to tow 2000 lbs.

GM still can sell trucks and SUVs and is able to get anyone with a dinky little utility trailer convinced that they need a truck or SUV, based on tow rating alone.

Whether it is just that or has something to do with regulation is irrelevant. The car is capable.

The Holden will tow about 1800kg (approx. 3,960 pounds) with the proper hitch and tow bar.

It's all about the hitch. They base the towing capacity on the little 2 bolt hitch they offer as an optional package from the car manufacturer, not a high quality load distributional hitch installed. With the right hitch setup, as long as the car's engine has the power to turn the wheels, it will pull it. And as long as the tongue weight isn't too heavy to physically break the mounting.

If you're automatic, always install the biggest aftermarket transmission cooler you can get your hands on. Bar/plate style, not tube. Factory transmission coolers in cars are actually not coolers, they are heaters. They heat up the transmission fluid from the car's hot coolant so it shifts smoother faster. They do cool some to a point, but only to point to what the water temp is. In modern cars? 190?? Heat is the killer of a transmission. I can't stress the fact that if you're towing, you need to install an aftermarket cooler on the return line to the transmission.
