I would be careful how you jump the starter solenoid. Jumping across the two large terminals means a few hundred amps going to the starter motor and the likelihood of arcing and burning the threads on the terminals. If you are determined to do this I would put one end of a jumper cable on the (yellow/red) starter terminal (if possible) and then touch the other to the battery's positive post. Applying power should spin the starter and show whether the starter motor is OK. If the starter spins I would agree that the solenoid is bad.
As an additional piece of info, last summer I could not get our boat (same model and engine) to start. It would crank but not fire. It turned out to be a bad in line fuse in the small power wire going from the "+" terminal of the battery to the engine computer. The fuse looked good, but the soldered cconnections inside the fuse itself were bad. Don't you just hate it when that kind of stuff happens?!!!
