Water in the bilge

Does anyone know if it's possible for a thru hull to only leak whrn the boat is moving? I get no intrusion if the boat is just sitting in the slip, nor do I get any from rain. The cooling system is intact and not leaking. The bellow is new and as I said, does not leak when just sitting in the slip. Is it possible that increased pressure when the boat is on plane could cause the transducer to leak? Easy fix? Thanks.

Anything is possible...however, I would look more toward something on the transom or rear third of the boat that may be underwater when you are underway. Maybe where a pitot tube or transducer cable goes through the transom, or swim ladder bolts. I see that kind of stuff all the time.

Thanks, but all transom holes are above the water line. I have a factory transducer and a seacock (closed) under the boat.

As Brian said could be the speedo tube leaking water if you have a pitot type speedometer. Is the speedometer working? There are a few threads on this board about it.

I never heard of a thru hull leaking only when underway but as Borchik says anything is possible. If it was my boat I would focus on things that might only get wet when moving:

Anchor locker drains
Bow eye
speedometer pitot tube
Rub rail

Some of these only get wet when the waves are big and your moving.

How much water are you getting and what boat do you have. Could the water be getting in while at rest but only makes it way to the bilge when the bow rises as you get up on plane? Other than engine stuff, more of the boat is out of the water when you are running.

Some air conditioner pick-ups have a scoop, this might cause more pressure when running the boat.

I know some guys have an issue after they install swim platforms. When they come to a stop water rushes up into the blower vent.

It's a 2004 268. I sucked about 8 gallons out of there after about 6 trips. I dried the whole area and left the hatch open to dry. We then had torrential rain and nothing came in and the boat sat in the slip for approximately a week before I used it again and it stayed dry. I Life Sealed the rub rail a while back, but I only did the top. I suppose the bottom is a possible point of entry. The front bilge is always dry, but the back is where the issue is. I am yanking the boat on Wednesday to bring it home for some maintenance. I think I'll do the bottom of the rub rail. I'm also going to keep the plug in and fill up the bilge to see if either thru hull is leaking. I'm pulling my last two hairs out! Thanks guys.

No automatic bilge pump? Throw in an 1100gph auto while you got it out.

I have one, but that is as low as the pump can get it based on its positioning. It's at the front of the motor, not the back.

I was taking water while docked but not nearly as much as when running, it's all my bilge could to to keep up.
Turned out to be my intermediate transom seal....

Pull the motor, install $5 gasket, silicone the chit outta it, put motor back in... $2700 @ a shop. but your 268 probably has a lot more room down in the motor bay than my 238...

Have you tried running the engine with the hatch up?
My 278 was doing the same thing. Only with the engine on and the engine hatch up could you hear "running water". New from the factory, there was a hose loose somewhere in there that spewed water only while running(pressure). Tech came down to the slip and tightened a hose clamp. Never leaked again.

Is the throughhull a scope with a grate, and pointed forward? My AC is like that and imagime there would be more pressure generated on the valve while underway. I know you said the valve was closed, but there are still the threads where the valve connects to the through hull.
Just guessing, but thought I'd throw it out there.

If you come off plane to fast water will run forward up the channel on the port side if the transom locker and overload those little scuppers in the channel for the engine hatch and run into the bilge.

I also had problems with those scuppers plugging up with junk.

It happened to me a couple times with my 268. I even had it come up under the door and get the carpet wet :oops:
