The past couple of times we've flushed our engines we've noticed a very high pitched buzzing sound. First we just noticed it in one engine but last weekend the other engine was doing the same. We can't quite figure out where its coming from but almost sounds like maybe a pulley or belt. Any ideas on what it might be?

Thanks

Failing fuel pumps sound like a belt getting ready to go out.

We had the fuel cell replaced on one of them at the end of the season last year. At first I thought it was the same thing on the other engine but now both of them are making the noise. And it sounds a little different.

Another victim of the failed government-mandated ethanol program.

Simply replacing the fuel pumps will not correct the root cause of the problem. You may have a restriction in your fuel sytem that must be cleared or you will continue to burn up pumps.

My symptons have been: high pressure fuel pump whining/overheating, loss of power and backfiring under load and excessively high pressure at the fuel rail.

So far I have replaced the pump assembly (fuel cell), fuel pressure regulator (the screen was clogged), and now I've pulled the injectors to be cleaned. Hopefully the injectors will be the last step until the other engine goes through the same thing...

Check the iBoats Volvo Penta forums for fuel pump issues, there are lots of them.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure our problem is fuel because we've never gotten fuel anywhere besides our marina and the fuel here is ethanol free.

I recently had an intermittent noise from the serpentine belt area of the engine. It turned out to be one of the idler pulleys. I identified the problem by using spray lubricant when the engine was off. The noise from the bad bearing quit for a while. It involved a cheap part and an easy DIY job.

Check out the water cooler line to the fuel pump. Ours made the same sound last year and we had to blow out the line. It was clogged. Noise went away as soon as the line was cleared.

John....I'm thinking that might be a good place to start. Can you tell me how you fixed it?

My mercruiser has two idler pulleys for the serpentine belt. The larger pulley provides the adjustment for the belt. In my case, the smaller pulley was making a noise. I bought a new pulley, used 5/16" and 5/8" wrenches to loosen the belt via the large pulley. The small pulley is replaced by removing the nut that hold it on, it comes off easily. Readjusting or tightening serpentine belts is another topic -I think the rule is no more than quarter inch deflection half way between two pulleys with moderate thumb pressure but I would be happy to receive professional advice on that.
