You definitely need the correct water intake thru hull fitting and a siphon break installed (and properly maintained) to run your genset at speed. If you do not have these, expect problems. The thru hull is just a flat thru hull (intake) seacock (shut off valve), not a forward facing clam shell under the hull like you would use for a live well. The siphon break must be mounted above the engine exhaust manifold.

If your genset was properly installed, you should be able to run at 28 mph.

I've run my generator while the boat was moving.

I run mine, no issues. The worst thing that will likely happen is burning up the impeller in the generator.

All right, I have to ask. Why do you run your gennys while cruising? A/C? Battery charger?

Mainly A/C. Kids usually in cabin when underway.

I also run while at speed. Admiral and kids love the A/C and ability to make coffee, food, movies etc on our long trips.

In the manual from Four Winns for my 97 278 Vista, it specifically states to NOT run the genset at speed, although it states it is fine to run the generator at no wake/certain speeds (IIRC, they give a specific speed like "the generator can be run underway as long as you dont exceed 12mph" or something like that). Im jelly of you 358 owners that can use it at cruise speeds!!

There is a similar thread on CSR and they have a lot of big water boaters over there that run them while on plane. They say that you need to start the gen prior to getting on plane though.
