Do you have a part number for the new part?

Not a new part, just a longer piece of pick-up fuel line you can buy anywhere.

Simple enough. Didn't have this issue on my 268, rather fix it than become an issue on this boat.

Update,

I have the boat back at the service shop for the 3rd time for the same no start condition. they have repalced the hight and low pressure fuel pumps, the anti siphon valve, spark plugs and the injector. I also had them check the pickup tube and it is about 3 inches from the bottom of the tank, which is well below 1/2 tank. Picked it up Friday afternoon and started it, it started but just barely. Saturday and Sunday, it didnt startat all.

I pulled one of the plugs and it was soaked with fuel, cranked the motor to blow the fuel out of the cylinder, and tried it again. It will crank and try to start, then the bendix on the starter kicks out and the starter stays running until it times out. After that it just cranks without even trying to start.

We are leaving for a 10 day trip on Friday, I sure hope they get to the bottom of this before then.

Anybody know a good Kohler tech that could help over the phone? It doesnt seem like this should be that hard to fix, its not rocket science. We only have 1 kohler shop in the area, I have tried to take it somewhere else and get told to take it where I have it now.

My Kohler started smelling of gas so I had my tech look at it and he ended up having to rebuild the carb. Perhaps this is the fuel flow issue?

This model is the low CO model and is fuel injected.

I just got off the phone with the shop and they are now telling me its a weak cylinder. 50 psi compression. He is tying it in with the fuel pump by saying if the pumps were leaning out the fuel mixture its possible it burnt an exhaust valve.

I know it isn't a fuel issue at this point, the whole fuel system has been replace basically. As hard as it was to hear, it does make some sense.

I hope warranty covers some of this.

Update,

The shop has the starboard motor out again, and the generator out again. Before pulling it, they tried staring it in the boat, it wouldn't start. It then wouldn't start on the bench. They did a compression test cold, because it wont start, and the #1 cylinder is weak. Pulled the rocker covers, and the rockers arms had no lash in them, meaning the valves were being held open slightly. Worse on #1 than #2, they loosened the rocker arms slightly, and it started right up.

Of course in the mean time, the exhaust valves are burnt and need replacing, so the heads are off and at the machine shop.

The service manager, speculates that the initial valve adjustment after delivery, which he thinks is 20 - 50 hrs, the valves are supposed to be adjusted. That gives them time to seat in. When they seat, the lash adjustment gets tighter, causing what I have.

I went thru the manual and cant find a thing about initial adjustment, albeit I didn't own the boat then. So I can hear it already, Mr Simon "this is not covered under warranty" grrrr!

Anyway, any of you guys with a Kohler generator, specifically the 5ECD, check with your shop about having the valve lash checked, to avoid this costly headache I am dealing with.

Manual says every 6 months/300 hours. I haven't done it on mine, or heard about it until now.

I'll have to look into it.

I missed it looking over the manual quickly yesterday. Heres the thing though, the service guy told me that even though they are a Kohler dealer and have all the Kohler manuals, the engine is a Kawasaki and they had to order the Kawasaki manual just to get the adjustment specs, so aparrently this isnt a do it yourselfer sorta thing

Thanks for the heads up. Sorry you are having such issues. How many hours did you have on the genset before it started acting up?

Here you go Jeff, just replace the whole generator for $3900.00. It's got a Ford engine so I'm sure it will never give you starting problems.

I'll have to look and see if I can find that manual online, I've got all the Kohler ones but not that one.
