Chunk in fin of outdrive

Must've hit somthing obviously. There's about a 1 inch chunk missing. How can this be fixed or do I have to get a whole new outdrive?

Any prop repair shop can also weld a new skeg onto it.

Np, I'm adding one to my drive just cause. It's cheap, looks cool, and keeps it from wearing and looking ugly

Shiny skeg guards look very nice but ..................when the skeg guard hits something hard and fast it'll take off any remnant of the original skeg, maybe some of the lower unit with it. I'm surprisee outdrives don't have bolt on replaceable skegs ( made of GF PP etc)

If there's not enormous damage to the skeg, something like "chemical metal" ( polyester or epovy ) works fine. My skeg was repaired some 6 years ago, still no sign of the repair failing ( visibly or structurally).

The skegguard only bolts on with two 1/4" bolts. They would sheer looooong before taking out the remainder of the skeg/part of the outdrive.

Personally I would run it as is - the skeg only comes into play when docking anyway. If you decide you need the guard I have one I can sell ya for $60+the ride (if your outdrive is an SX). I bought it because I am anal retentive and my skeg was tweeked a bit. Then I got lazy and decided not to install it as my boat does just fine as is.

*edit* just noticed you are in the UK-so you would probably not want to pay for the ride across the pond.

I do not like those skeg guards for the problem that I have seen people hit rocks with them on and it breaks the housing right off into the bullet section, makes it non repairable. You hit a rock with your skeg and 99% of the time it is repairable with just some skeg work.

UK? I live in Amarillo, Texas. I see there's pros and cons to skeg guard. I thought with a chunk in it I'd lose some speed and turning issues. Am I wrong?

I just bought some fiberglass when I took a little chunk out of mine last year and can't tell at all. Looks factory...

Yes you are correct. The bigger issue would be dual drives, it will give you a balance problem. As far as the rest of the comments go, it depends on where you boat. If you are in places that are a problem, then you will have a problem. The only prop I have tore up so far was at Lake Mead. I decided to buzz an island and did not know they dropped the water over the week.
In most cases though "Shit Happens, but Stupidity reign's supreme".

Myself, I love the original Skeggard as ric pointed out. If you break your bullet it is because you hit it, not because two 1/4" bolts held up. Getting ready to order a couple next month when I pull the drives to make them look pretty and take care of a small leak in one of them.

I have a skew guard on mine. It had a chunk taken out by the PO. Yes, if I hit something hard it will most likely damage the lower unit, but I do have insurance!
