So I was able to cut out of work early today and took the extra time to take our boat out for a quick "test" run before the weekend with the whole family.

All in all the boat runs great...the engine runs great and I was very pleased with our purchase. During a quick break we raised the engine compartment cover and my Uncle says, "you got water leaking".. ##@@!!#$ Some quick diagnosis and originally thought it was one of the hoses coming from the water pump. Pulling the boat out of the water, I pulled the plug and it wasn't a ton of water, maybe a gallon or two over an hour of runtime.

Getting back home with a little more time and a flashlight, I discovered that the hoses were fine, but it appears to be leaking from the bottom of the water pump.

My question is, should I just replace the water pump or just wait it out? I know it is a stupid question just thought I would throw it out there. Also where is the best place to find good prices on parts online?

FYI: looks like the pump has been leaking for a while as there is some corrosion on the bottom.

The boat is a 96, replace it or it least check to see if a new gasket is all that is needed. It will cost you more in time & money if you break down out on the water.

When you say waterpump, are you refering to the pump that houses the impeller (looks like a power steering pump) or the waterpump on the front of the engine that circulates water through the engine? If it is the impeller pump housing, those can be a little pricey, $300.00 to $350.00. I am betting it is the seal that goes around the shaft. You can buy a kit for those much cheaper than replacing. My 96' leaks a small amount there too. I am gonna go the kit route this winter for next season.

Call these guys: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/ Ask for Brody McDermott, he will help ya out with parts and such.

On the website volvopentastore.com, there is a diagram and it shows the part as #31 (water pump). I am pretty sure I will just replace it, even though it is pricey. I don't want to have issues again if I just replace the seals.

Yep, seawater pump. How bad does yours leak? Mine just drips a very little bit, kinda like a drippy faucet. If you decide to buy a whole new pump, I would also order the seal kit and fix the old one, then hang on to it for a spare.

Can anyone provide any feedback about ordering parts online? I am looking for a good deal on a water pump (Volvo part #3858847) and since I have never ordered any marine parts online any feedback on experiences with different sites would be appreciated.

I have had excellent experience with the company and salesman I linked in my earlier post. He even called me to tell me he put the wrong part # in the order and was just calling to say because of his mistake the part might be delayed, but he was gonna overnight it at no charge to speed it up.

Not the only site by far, just sayin I had a good experience with them.
