I look at the cruisers long and hard, but my kids are 7 and 4, there are swimming and skating lessons, dance lessons and just so many other activities that I don't want them to miss out on. I want to go cruising for the weekends, but day boating will have to tide me over for a while still.
Stick with a day boat, buy a cottage on a lake instead of a hole in the water. you will thank me for it someday

People know a cruiser will be über expensive to run, and by no means an investment in any way shape or form.
We once had a cottage on a closed lake with a day boat. I knew every rock, cottage, and inch of shoreline on it like the back of my hand and ended up bored out of my mind. We sold it, and bought a townhouse near the water and are on our 2nd cruiser. We can spend every weekend on it exploring and enjoying Georgian Bay and Trent Severn System. Over the last 10 years of cruising we've had pretty amazing experiences out there and made life long close friends doing it. We'll likely move on eventually because you just can't do it forever, but I have no regrets at all having that hole in the water. Just sayin........
cheers
