That's why I kept the small, cheap-to-keep boat!
Running costs:
Mooring rental:400
Bottom paint:400 (won't do that myself)
Maintenance: labor: 0, all done by me; parts/supplies: ~200 or so
Storage: 0, on trailer in driveway

Only way to do boating for me....

I sold mine! Bizarre feeling but have to admit that not having to haul it, winterize it, store it, and pay for it all winter feels kinda nice. :) need to enjoy the freedom and decide what's next.

Sorry to hear that Cincy but I definitely understand too. Boating is fantastic and provides unforgettable times, but the burdens are commensurate.

I look at the cruisers long and hard, but my kids are 7 and 4, there are swimming and skating lessons, dance lessons and just so many other activities that I don't want them to miss out on. I want to go cruising for the weekends, but day boating will have to tide me over for a while still.

Stick with a day boat, buy a cottage on a lake instead of a hole in the water. you will thank me for it someday

Cap'n don't be a hater :) !

People know a cruiser will be über expensive to run, and by no means an investment in any way shape or form.
We once had a cottage on a closed lake with a day boat. I knew every rock, cottage, and inch of shoreline on it like the back of my hand and ended up bored out of my mind. We sold it, and bought a townhouse near the water and are on our 2nd cruiser. We can spend every weekend on it exploring and enjoying Georgian Bay and Trent Severn System. Over the last 10 years of cruising we've had pretty amazing experiences out there and made life long close friends doing it. We'll likely move on eventually because you just can't do it forever, but I have no regrets at all having that hole in the water. Just sayin........

cheers

Basically what I did 22 years ago in Long Island NY. Bought a house in a beach community with a waterview and mooring rights. Nice beach association and the harbor leads you out to LI Sound. Great boating area you just have to know his to deal with the salt water.

Without a doubt, owning a boat is a bad investment. However, I am a member of a yacht club and I am in sales (loan originator) and do enough business with the members to cover my club dues, slip fees and many times even more. I just hope my children marry some of these rich members' kids one day.
