This guy is the only one making this prediction right now and it is purely a guess. My experience in the finance industy has shown that no one has a clue what is going to happen. So much of the price is due to speculation and there are plenty of other analysts saying that it is over inflated and current pricing is not justified. Lets all pray because even if it doubles the world is in for a depression

hmm ....

How many of you are old enough to remember this "famous last words" line?:

"If gas ever hits $1.00 per gallon .... I'm not driving!"

If it gets to half that much anytime in the next 15 years, we're going to have a lot bigger things to worry about.

Hopefully, this story has some merit which thinks pricing should start coming back down:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/05/22/ccoil122.xml

On NBC this morning, Jim Cramer predicted it to hit $5 within 3 months, but that the max he thought it could go was around $7 and then demand would drop enough for the price to start coming back down.

One Question I was thinking of, how safe is the 65 Gallons of gas I keep in my boat (if full). Can it be easily syphoned by someone wanting to steal gas?

Agreed 230mike. If we cannot find another source of energy to sustain the way of life we have become accustomed to.
I may then invest in a case of flat black spray paint and anchor in a hidden cove with my potatoe cannon and hope for the best.
I am in the offshore oil buisness and granted I know very little of whats happening in the higher levels of managment but I do know a few things.
For example we used to see day rates in the area of $125k - $160k / day only a few years ago and were pretty happy to get it. Contracts were often well to well. A well could cost in the area of $50 - $90 million as a duster or otherwise. Mobilization to get a rig on site would set you back a cool million.
As of late dayrates are in the $300k / day and more for the same equipment. Mobilization (dependant on distance of course) has swelled to 5 million + in some instances. Contracts are longer term because oil companies are finding it difficult to retain a rig if they do not already have one.
Construction is w!de @$$ open to replace the aging fleets many contractors still have in service.
I was recently in the UK on buisness and by the time you convert US / Can $ to Pounds Sterling and pay what they are for diesel it worked out in the area of $9.25 / US gallon. There was a refinery going on strike at the time for the weekend only and there were lineups around the block to fill up. Hoarding, fighting and the local autorities threatening to lock down certain stations as emergency services use only. Frightning.
But alas we have been down the energy crisis road before at least in the late 60's early 70's when we had the invasion of little Hondas Toyotas and Datsuns, then things got OK somehow.
I'm not loosing sleep with the belief that they may get bad but will get better again. I am going to boat and drive for as long as I can afford to do so - and I will love and appreciate every moment of it.
Should have looked into a jib and spinnaker (whatever they are) option for the 210 :)

I would only add that in the situation I envision you might want something a bit more potent than a 'tater canon. :(

I removed all the gas from my FW last year, I eneded up, pulling out the float valve to get it to the gas, It was near impossible to get a hose all the way to the tank, going the "normal" way, your mileage may differ.

I have a question that I haven't seen addressed. Isn't it possible we are going through the same "cycle" we did in the later '70's where there were record prices, long lines and the introduction of Honda Civics?? Then we had the late '90's an .90 cent gas that I remember.

Isn't it possible that once people drop their SUV's for daily commutes and go hybrid and mass transit changes are made demand will drop and prices will go back down? Or are China etc going to make that impossible? I just can't envision where only the wealthy can afford it. There seems to have to be a balance so long as there truly isn't a supply shortage like I firmly believe.

I think that's the point - each person needs to decide first and foremost whether or not they believe there is a true shortage of supply. I do think China and India make the whole equation different than the 70's, and while we will someday become a society of SmartCars and bicycles, the reality in the short to medium terms is that we can only cut back so much. People still have to go to work, most areas don't have an acceptable public transportation system (and IMO most people won't use it if they did have it, me included), etc.

I know this - the U.S. has got billions of barrels of oil under it, and a key reason we aren't extracting it is over-regulation and the environmentalist nut jobs.

I say "burn theirs first" - then we have our supply for later

I doubt gas will be 10 or even 8 gallon. Economy will fall apart. We are doing our part while the rest of the world doesn't time to pump our own.

I bet last year I would be paying $4-5 per gallon this summer, which we are. I am willing to bet that with the global shortage we will see $6-7 per gallon by next summer! Chinas demand for oil is going up faster than we can conserve.

Boating for me this year will be a couple trips to the lake! Next year boating may be the only family vacation, will have to give up disneyland for gas money!
