We looked at the Chap 290, decided on the Vista 288 because of the well in front of the cain door with the Chap and it's proximity to the raised helm seat. Our primary focus was a convertible berth. Unfortunately FW decided to make the 288 a fixed v-berth, a bad choice IMHO. I have to disagree with Bill about how much "entertaining" you can do below. We routinely have another couple over for a dinner when we cruise. When it is 90 outside at 9 p.m., eating below in the A/C is the only option other than a restaurant. The adults sit comfortable in the v-berth and the two kids get the dinette. This would be impossible if not for the convertible v-berth. In addition, going on a day trip, the table give us usable space, a fixed berth is a waste.
True, when you're dealing with excessive heat it's certainly nice to be able to escape into air conditioning. We're fortunate that the evenings here are generally not a problem. If I had to trade between guest seating or sleeping comfortably, well, we'd go ashore for dinner. As for kids, the mid-cabin table will work nicely. But I'll agree that to have the option for seating would be good.
