Cougar,

Don't you have to duck and crawl into the mid cabin on the 318? While "I" don't have an issue with that, I can see non boater friends, feeling that is a bit awkward.

What is your take on it?

The 318 is one gorgeous machine, regardless of it's cabin layout. That boat has LINES! :)

Maybe, but at that time they already had the 298 to cover that option. But it did not have the permanent V-Berth like the 298.

Brett- there is a natural step down into the mid berth... and no - I don't have to duck *much* to get into it.

That's on one side of the couches -- on the other side -- it's a little tougher. Not an issue for the ladies at all.

But it's still considered "open" thanks to the stair tread design. I can easily sit back on the couch and have a conversation with my wife if she's on the forward berth or at the galley doing something.

I should also note...

Look for a new 288-- maybe dubbed a 218??? for next year.

I've heard mumblings of a re-design of the 30 footer for model year 2010.

I was told the 318's and above are safe until 2012-2013

We looked at the Chap 290, decided on the Vista 288 because of the well in front of the cain door with the Chap and it's proximity to the raised helm seat. Our primary focus was a convertible berth. Unfortunately FW decided to make the 288 a fixed v-berth, a bad choice IMHO. I have to disagree with Bill about how much "entertaining" you can do below. We routinely have another couple over for a dinner when we cruise. When it is 90 outside at 9 p.m., eating below in the A/C is the only option other than a restaurant. The adults sit comfortable in the v-berth and the two kids get the dinette. This would be impossible if not for the convertible v-berth. In addition, going on a day trip, the table give us usable space, a fixed berth is a waste.

True, when you're dealing with excessive heat it's certainly nice to be able to escape into air conditioning. We're fortunate that the evenings here are generally not a problem. If I had to trade between guest seating or sleeping comfortably, well, we'd go ashore for dinner. As for kids, the mid-cabin table will work nicely. But I'll agree that to have the option for seating would be good.

You may have heard about a 28/30 footer. Not sure it is a Vista though.

FW will have an SL282 for 2010. LOA is in the 30 foot range. Most likely, that
is the "mumblings" you heard.

The 288 is the last of the Vista line to be "updated' with the new lines.

I knew about the 282.... I wonder if that's the mumblings.

We shall see. My gut tells me the 288 will be retired for a new 30 foot small, twin Vista.
