Changing my outdrive oil next week and wondering about outside air temp's effect on oil. Will 50DEG temperatures significantly affect this process, or will running the engine (at idle) on muffs with transmission engaged warm up the drive oil enough to help it flow? Will store the new oil indoors until it's time to add it.

I did mine this week when it was 70 degrees out...let the engine run in neutral about 30 min... (dog clutch Cobra spins both upper gears and lower in neutral) and it stil takes a while to drain...but on a 50 degree day I'd say for sure run it...now on a Volvo I'm not sure if you want to have it in gear or not but if you do remove the prop (drain is behind prop anyway right?)....

Just a thought, and please someone chime in here if this is a bad idea. How about placing a small heater near the outdrive for a while to artificially warm the whole outdrive?

You'd have to have it in gear to get the lower unit warmed up; the clutch is in the upper unit on a SX/ DPS. As Lou mentioned, for safety sake remove the prop(s) first and on the DPS the drain is behind the forward prop in any case. A heater may help, provided it doesn't heat the outside up enough to bubble the paint!

I remove my dirve each year and drain in the the luxury of a heated garage, so no problems with viscosity. Now if you were expecting 50 deg.C and not 50 deg. F, there wouldn't be any problem at all!
