You'd have to have it in gear to get the lower unit warmed up; the clutch is in the upper unit on a SX/ DPS. As Lou mentioned, for safety sake remove the prop(s) first and on the DPS the drain is behind the forward prop in any case. A heater may help, provided it doesn't heat the outside up enough to bubble the paint!
I remove my dirve each year and drain in the the luxury of a heated garage, so no problems with viscosity. Now if you were expecting 50 deg.C and not 50 deg. F, there wouldn't be any problem at all!
