Good 12 volt TV find

My TV in the boat recently went out so the search for a new one began. I found a great boat friendly TV at BestBuy. Their Insignia (house brand) LED TV has an external power converter. What does this mean? It mean you can stop at Radio Shack and buy a $1.50 size M solder on power connector and wire the TV directly into your boats 12V system. It doesn't have a built in DVD but with a small inverter and a $49 DVD player I am back in business. I put a 22" right above the aft berth where my 19" was. The TV is thin, light, and has is1080p, the only downside is that it didn't come with a universal remote. Just an FYI for anyone looking for a 12V TV for the boat.

I looked into this when seeking a TV for our forward berth. I opted to get a small inverter instead and went with a regular 110vdc TV (one with a DVD built into it).

Bear in mind that 12vdc electronic devices can be VERY, VERY sensitive to their power requirements. You cannot just power them straight from an engine-driven 12v system. The voltage from these systems fluctuates quite a lot. As high as 14vdc and then much lower as the batteries drain. This can cause actual harm to devices that expect consistent 12vdc power. STFW and read up on how LEDs used in cars burn out way too fast because of it. There are such things as dc-dc regulators that will smooth out the voltage. I have not looked into them.

So unless the device is sold with an actual cigarette lighter outlet style power cord you want to be very careful about just splicing it straight into the boat's 12vdc power.

Just finished our Insignia 22" TV install, but we got ours a couple years ago at best buy, so it has an internal converter. Seeing that it runs on 70 watts, I can use just about any inverter to run if I dont want the Generator running.

I ran VGA cable along with RCA A/V cable for DVD / laptop use. Sound will still go to head unit/sound system in boat.

I had to custom make a TV mounting bracket, should have taken a photo or two when installing. I will try to get some next time I am in the boat. TV only sticks out from wall approx 1/2". Most mounting bracket were for home use and swiveled, tilted, ect... and that made them flimsy and hung of the wall more than I liked.
